I recently discovered the 30 Day Shred by Jillian Michaels and I have to say I am more than impressed. I can’t even tell you how many at-home workout regimens I’ve started and quickly lost interest in. Some I’ve gotten really excited about at first only to see that excitement quickly dissipate into lack of motivation or boredom.
I do it for a few days and am pleasantly surprised that it’s not as tough as I thought and that it’s going to keep my interest piqued for months to come. Of course after a couple more sessions the inevitable happens. I realize it’s too hard, too easy or simply too boring. I start to put it off until later in the day, okay, maybe tomorrow, maybe I’ll do it three times a week instead of four, or once a week is fine, and so on.
I’m sure it’s the same for lots of you too. I’ve tried so many, from relaxing yoga to high intensity workouts, but until now have never found any that I can stick to.
This time things are different. There is no struggle to motivate myself and I actually look forward to working out. The 30 Day Shred combines cardio, strength and abs in a 20-minute workout. It comprises three levels of increasing intensity. It is intended that you do each level for ten days straight before moving on to the next. Now I should note that I haven’t been using this DVD exactly as it’s intended. Instead I have been doing each level once a week. This just works for me and my routine right now.
Why I Love This Workout
It’s just shy of 30 minutes per session including warm up and cool down. At the moment I can only take 30 minutes out of my day to exercise so this is a perfect fit.
It keeps me interested.
Each set of exercises is short and there are few repetitions so there is no chance of me getting bored.
It combines movements.
A lot of the exercises combine arm and leg movements so you get more bang for your buck.
The things I like least are near the beginning.
We all have exercises that we dread and others that we don’t mind so much. I’m not sure if this is intentional but most of the ones I don’t like are near the beginning of the workouts so I get them out of the way early on.
Why the 30 Day Shred is Perfect For Me Right Now
It includes explosive movements.
You choose your weight level.
The only equipment required for this workout is a pair of hand weights. I use small 3lb weights because while I want to improve my arm strength I don’t want my arms to be bulky.
It works the entire body.
You get to work your entire body in one workout. If you’re like me and only have a short time in which to exercise this is great for covering everything.
I never thought I’d say this about a workout video but I actually find most of the moves fun and I really like Jillian’s lighthearted approach.
What about downsides? Come on, there must be some downsides? The only one for me would be repetition. It could get old listening to the same commentary over and over especially if you do the workout the way it’s meant to be done with ten consecutive days at each level. But of course, repetition is a downside for any workout video and I think this video has way more positives than any others I’ve tried.
