When I decided to start running I didn’t have a lot of preconceived notions about the impact it would have on my life. My main reason for taking up running was to improve my fitness and stamina. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it and if I’d be able to stick with it. But I soon realized that I love it, as least for now anyway. I was expecting to feel better, to feel more fit and healthy. This has indeed happened and I’m getting fitter each week. However, there have also been some unforeseen effects along the way.
Running is giving me an unexpected feeling of Zen. Knowing that I’ve worked out in the morning makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something. But I think there are other factors at play here. For a start being in nature immediately fills me with a sense of calm. I also think that running, like any exercise, is a form of self-care. I’m taking that time alone to focus on doing something for myself. These things combined lead to a calmer and more relaxed me.
I know exercising in general is good for your skin but I feel like running does something different. Maybe it’s from being outside or maybe it’s more intense cardio than I’ve ever done, but I’m so surprised how quickly my skin has changed. I’m often prone to the odd pimple but I haven’t seen any in weeks and I definitely have a healthy glow.
Way More Energy
I used to think running was a chore and something that zapped all of my energy. But these days I find it so invigorating. I even feel I have more energy in the evenings than I used to.
The grocery bill has skyrocketed. Since I started working out and running I can’t believe my appetite. I’m almost as hungry as when I was nursing! I guess it’s a good thing that I have to opportunity to put more nutrients into my body, but boy is it expensive.
Respecting My Body
Whenever I partake in any form of exercise, for some reason I am surprised at my body and its ability to do things. With running, it’s no different. Sometimes while running I start to really think about what I’m doing. I think about how so many parts of my body are working together to power me down the street. They are working in complex synergy to convert my energy stores into this incredible motion. It really makes me have a newfound respect for my body and its abilities.
