It’s easy to assume that everyone who runs is doing it for fitness alone. But as I’ve discovered that’s not always the case and there are so many more benefits of running. In fact fitness only just made it to my top three reasons for why I run. Here are those reasons in case you’re wondering.
Getting Fresh Air
Working from home in the winter was awesome! Aside from the many other benefits there was no need to go out in far sub-zero temperatures at ridiculous o’clock in the morning to commute to work. But now that the weather is warmer, I can’t help but miss getting out. When I was off on maternity leave I would spend hours outside every day taking my kids for walks and to the playground. I love being outside and getting a load of that fresh air. So how could I get that back? Enter running. Even though my current two-mile run is only twenty minutes outside I’m getting a ton more of that lovely fresh air than I would on a twenty minute walk. I have never been a runner before; in fact I really hated it; but something has changed. My innate desire to be outside and gulp in lungfuls of invigorating air has far overtaken any hatred I had for the act of running.
Enjoying the Neighbourhood
Another thing that drives me is our neighbourhood. Prior to our last move we tended to live amongst a lot more traffic. Those neighbourhoods had their benefits but they were busy streets that lacked greenery and nature. Our current neighbourhood can only be described as lovely. Beautiful gardens, quiet streets with mature trees, only a few people about but whom are always ready with a smile or a wave. For me this environment has made such a huge difference. I want to be out in this neighbourhood, appreciating the flowers, the neat lawns and the huge trees. I want to see the kids play, hear the birds sing and nod hello to passersby. It’s a beautiful place to run.
There’s also of course the fitness aspect. This isn’t my primary focus for why I run and is in fact definitely trumped by the previous two reasons, but it is still very important to me. Of course, running is part of my prep for the Mud Hero race so I need to keep going and keep improving.
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about my top 3 benefits of running. How about you? What are your reasons for running or doing other activities?
